Elementary Education, Certifying to Teach, B.A.

The Columbia College Elementary Education Program is a 4-year undergraduate program preparing elementary candidates to work primarily in public and private schools (grades 2-6).  Students graduate with a BA degree from the Division of Education with a major in Elementary Education.  The main scope of preparation is to work with children and youth ages 7-12, although courses and field experiences introduce students to a broader developmental range.  The program meets all state and national accreditation guidelines for initial certification for 4-year institutions.  

Mission: The mission of the Elementary Education program area is to prepare elementary collaborative professionals who know, understand, and use the major concepts, principles, theories, and research related to child and adolescent development to construct learning opportunities that support individual student’s development, acquisition of knowledge and motivation.   

 
Student Learning Outcomes:  

  1. The Elementary Education teacher candidate will demonstrate knowledge of content required in Elementary Education including the learner and learning, instructional practices, and professional responsibilities.   

  1. The Elementary Education teacher candidate will effectively use multiple methods of assessment to plan and make data driven instructional decisions. 

  1. The Elementary Education teacher candidate can plan and effectively implement instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners 

  2. The Elementary Education teacher candidate will demonstrate professional behaviors and ethical practice in collaboration with children and youth, their family members, and school and community service providers. 

Requirements


Teacher candidates are required to pass all three parts of the Praxis Core: Reading, Writing and Math. Designated courses provide an additional 1 semester hour lab of support for candidates that have not exempted or passed the required test. Lab course are EDU 150R  , EDU 218W   and MATH 117M  . Students should consult with their advisor.

A grade of C or better is required in the following courses for this program: EDU 229, 260, 271, 354, 357, 360, 361, 372, 384, 431, 452, 473, 485LS, and 486LS.
