Higher Education Administration, M.Ed.


Program Chair: Kristine Barnett, Ed.D

Designed for the generalist leader in higher education, the M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration combines practical skill and competency building with the theory and nuanced thinking needed for today and tomorrow’s resilient leaders. Students will engage in courses that present a full perspective of higher education in the U. S.. Through their coursework, students explore best practices in educational leadership. Students  may complete an in-depth course or professional certificate in Trauma-Informed Practices, adding depth and immediate applicability to their professional endeavors.

Delivered fully online in less than one year.

Mission: The mission of the Higher Education Administration master’s program at Columbia College is to provide academic preparation and professional development to individuals who are currently in, or interested in, positions of leadership in four-year, community, and technical colleges and universities. A comprehensive program of study focuses on the preparation and development of reflective, ethical, and transformative practitioners. 

 

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. The Higher Education candidate will describe the history, philosophical frameworks and structures of higher education. 
  2. The Higher Education candidate will analyze the characteristics of diverse students and the different student populations in postsecondary education. 
  3. The Higher Education candidate will situate refinement of their own leadership strengths within the preferred and most effective skills and competencies for leadership in higher education.
  4. The Higher Education candidate will identify the legal foundations and assess financial constraints that affect higher education administration. 
  5. The Higher Education candidate will apply student development theory to practice.
  6. The Higher Education candidate will identify and critique issues and trends in higher education organization and administration. 
  7. The Higher Education candidate will identify program assessment techniques for higher education. 
  8. The Higher Education candidate will research, and evaluate and a contemporary issue in higher education.
  9. The Higher Education candidate may complete a professional certificate in Trauma-Informed Practices through a focused course.
