English majors who plan to become teachers of English in secondary institutions also meet requirements for certification by the State Department of Education

Recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the South Carolina State Board of Education under the guidance of the 2022 CAEP standards, the Columbia College English Education program prepares educators to work in 9-12 grade English classrooms. Graduates of the program are “learner ready” on day one as educators who embody the attitudes and skills of dedicated professionals, committed to working with others to provide a quality education for high school students.


The Division of Education provides opportunities for future teachers to exercise leadership in their careers and has built a strong reputation for providing well-trained teachers to the public schools of SC and beyond. 

Requirements


A grade of C or better is required in the following courses for this program: EDU 240, 260, 360, 381, 379, 420E, 485LS, 486LS, WRIT 340, ENG 278, and 495
