The applied mathematics curriculum covers the standard calculus courses as well as additional required courses that are application-oriented (such as discrete mathematics, differential equations, linear algebra, and probability and statistics). In addition, students will take mathematically oriented courses in another discipline and connect their learning in mathematics and the other discipline in a problem-solving capstone course. In addition, we offer an actuarial math certificate for students seeking a career in insurance or banking industry.
Mission: The applied mathematics program is committed to providing mathematics majors with coursework and experiences that will enable them to enter a mathematics-related career in business, industry, or government. The curriculum emphasizes problem-solving, communication, and technology in both collaborative and individual settings. All majors are required to complete courses in another discipline and the capstone course.
Student Learning Outcomes
The successful student will:
- Analyze and solve applied problems using continuous mathematical concepts.
- Analyze and solve applied problems using discrete mathematical concepts.
- Correctly utilize appropriate mathematical notation and vocabulary when communicating mathematical ideas, arguments, and solutions.
- Synthesize mathematics with at least one other discipline.
- Apply technological tools appropriately and correctly when solving problems.
