Higher Education Administration, M.Ed.


Program Chair: Jim Lane, Ph.D

The Master of Education in Higher Education Administration program focuses on a global view of higher education administration, which will prepare candidates for addressing the most critical and relevant issues faced in higher education today. Candidates will gain knowledge in governance, organization, leadership, student affairs, enrollment management, finance, and the law.  Students will also complete an Action Research project on an area of interest within Higher Education Administration.   The program is designed so candidates complete the program in one calendar year.  The hybrid format allows candidates to learn from faculty and peers in face-to-face sessions four times a semester; these sessions are augmented by online course assignments and coursework. The program also required a practicum for candidates not employed in a higher education setting.  

Mission: The mission of the Higher Education Administration master’s program at Columbia College is to provide academic preparation and professional development to individuals who are currently in, or interested in, positions of leadership in four-year, community, and technical colleges and universities. A comprehensive program of study focuses on the preparation and development of reflective, ethical, and transformative practitioners. 

 

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. The Higher Education candidate will describe the history, philosophy and structure of higher education in general and specifically the history of student affairs and enrollment management administration. 
  2. The Higher Education candidate will articulate the characteristics of students and the different student populations in postsecondary education. 
  3. The Higher Education candidate will identify the legal foundations and financial constraints that affect higher education administration. 
  4. The Higher Education candidate will apply student development theory to the practice of enrollment management administration 
  5. The Higher Education candidate will identify and critique issues and trends in higher education organization and administration. 
  6. The Higher Education candidate will identify program assessment techniques for higher education.
