Nursing, RN to BSN, B.S.N.

The Online RN to BSN degree targets students who have completed an ADN degree and hold an unencumbered Registered Nurse license.  It is designed to provide students with the leadership skills that are essential for a successful career in the healthcare environment. Our program provides a strong foundation in the theory of nursing and the critical thinking and communication skills necessary to advance in the profession and/or pursue graduate studies in nursing. In addition to pursuing leadership and management roles, a BSN will also give students the ability to pursue advanced practice degrees in more specialized fields.

Mission: The mission of the nursing program at Columbia College is to prepare nurses to become competent leaders in their professional nursing practices. The nursing program embraces the core values of social justice and service to educate nurses that will provide compassionate and culturally sensitive care to improve the health and wellness of the diverse community that Columbia College exists within.

The RN to BSN Program at Columbia College is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. All advanced Nursing courses are taught by experienced nurses and healthcare professionals.

 

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will be able to understand the principles, standards, practices related to nursing practice.  
  2. Students will understand the human, ethical, and cultural dimensions of nursing leadership and management.  
  3. Students will be able to apply planning, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to a range of nursing issues.  
  4. Students will be able to communicate effectively with a range of audiences. 
  5. Students will understand the management functions within a healthcare organization and the leadership strategies useful to achieve the goals and objectives of the organization.

Scientific Literacy and Mathematics


The following courses must be taken to satisfy the Scientific Literacy and Mathematics requirements respectively.

Articulation with Midlands Technical College for students without an Associate Degree in Nursing


Available in the Day College.

Students will complete courses for the Associate Degree in Nursing at Midlands Technical College and become licensed as an RN before completing upper-level nursing courses at Columbia College. Incoming first-year students must submit qualifying standardized test scores to be admitted to this program. (SAT: EBRW 500 and Math 580 or ACT: composite score of 20 with minimum English 20 and minimum Math 24). Test scores must be less than 3 years old.  This format is delivered in the residential settings.

Program Design: This program is a hybrid program that is composed of three distinct stages outlined below.

Stage 1: Initial two years of general education and required nursing pre-requisites are taken on campus at Columbia College. During this time students are classified as Pre-Nursing and Community Health Majors.  The required nursing prerequisites are:

 

Stage 2: Five semesters of clinical coursework to prepare for an Associate Degree in Nursing are taken at Midlands Technical College.

 

Stage 3: Once students have passed the NCLEX and have an unencumbered nursing license, they return to complete their RN to BSN online through Columbia College by taking the ten upper-level nursing courses outlined above and the required chemistry course listed below.
