Chemistry, B.A.

Extensive and challenging, our undergraduate Chemistry degree builds on the fundamentals of chemistry and incorporates personalized programs of study to support and enhance student career goals. Students intending to attend science graduate programs are encouraged to participate in undergraduate research and an internship is a good option for those pursuing a career in industry.   Additionally, the chemistry program has a biochemistry track for students interested in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and other graduate programs in the health professions. 

Mission: The mission of the chemistry major at Columbia College is to inspire and educate students and to ensure that they have a good understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry. The faculty focuses on training and mentoring undergraduate students in all aspects of chemistry, promoting of scientific reasoning in the formulation of questions and conclusions involving chemical phenomena, and preparing students for graduate study or employment in their chosen fields.  

 

Student Learning Outcomes: 

  1. Students will demonstrate content knowledge at an appropriate level for the course areas required in the curriculum (general, organic, analytical, biological and physical chemistry.) 
  2. Students will demonstrate their ability to use a variety of scientific instruments in a proficient manner. 
  3. Students will be able to make effective oral presentations on chemistry related subjects.
